The Turnandot 911 Story

My wife, Christine Brinning, was singing In Questa Reggia one day shortly after 911, and I, not knowing the meaning of the Italian lyrics of this aria from Puccini’s opera, Turandot, commented that the feeling I got from this tragic song were similar to the emotions I experience when I think of 911. Christine suggested that perhaps I could write a modern lyric based on the events of 911. I did so and the results are what we call Turandot 911. The music that you hear on this five minute video is that of Christine singing In Questa Reggia. The lyrics are my own. Both are placed in public domain in the hope that those hearing and seeing it may find healing from the tragic events of that day. Nick Munn created the DVD version with video images from photos in the public domain on the Flash Video version of Turandot 911.

Lyrics to Turandot 911

By William Bronson 5/21/02

God hear me, my bold inquisition.

How could such tragedies on earth occur?

Death, destruction, religious infamy!

We awoke one lovely sunny morning.

The skies were so blue

One could almost see into heaven

While we on earth went on our way like on any other day.

Then the dastardly act, so terrible, so improbable,

Held us in the thrall of disbelief.

Down the rivers came flying two airplanes

With their passengers turning toward the city.

And the whole nation watched them pierce down

Like a spear through the heart of the whole world.

Falling from the sky, smoke and debris, ashes to ashes,

The towers came tumbling from on high to the ground.

The wounded were carried by their helpers

Crying in sorrow for family and friends

Who left behind in rubble

Were dying by the thousands, deprived of any hope.

It tore our souls, we all cried:

Almighty, help us change our hearts.

Voices from the ashes, voices from the whole world

Are asking just one question:

What can we learn from this for peace?

Our God, we pledge to you never again shall we

Make battle in vengeance against our brothers.

The blood of our enemies is our own blood.

We make this humble plea with all our hearts.

Now, now, through all this darkness, Lord, show us your Light!
